Ms. Charani Patabendige, Acting Research Analyst at the Institute of National Security Studies established and functioning under the Ministry of Defence, presented a paper titled “The Legal Void: The Imperative of Criminalizing Online Disinformation in Sri Lanka and its Impact on National Security” at the 14th Asian Criminology Conference. This conference, a collaborative effort between the Asian Criminological Society and the Faculty of Criminal Justice of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU), provided a platform for Patabendige to underscore the critical necessity of criminalizing online disinformation. In her presentation, she emphasized the potential consequences of the legal vacuum in addressing this issue and its implications for national security in Sri Lanka.
