INSS Research Staff Shine at 16th International Research Conference of the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University

The Institute of National Security Studies proudly announces the successful participation of its team members at the 16th International Research Conference hosted by the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University on 8th September 2023.

Commander Amila Prasanga, Military Research Officer, presented a compelling paper titled "The Nexus of Climate Change and Human Security in Sri Lanka: Implications for Small Island Developing States in the Indian Ocean Region." This research explores the profound impact of climate change on human security in Sri Lanka and its implications for vulnerable island nations across the Indian Ocean. It underscores the urgency of integrated approaches encompassing social, economic, and environmental aspects, shedding light on the climate change and human security nexus in Sri Lanka and its relevance to neighboring island states.

Ms. Charani Patabendige, Acting Research Analyst and Research Assistant at INSS, presented a paper titled 'Changing Threat Dimensions; Preventing Extremism In The Digital Age' . This discussion on extremism and its implications is closely linked to national security. Extremism, as she emphasized, transcends military aspects and encompasses broader societal contexts as a psychological phenomenon. In the digital age, where technology plays a pivotal role, the online proliferation of extremism poses a significant national security challenge. Online platforms disseminate extremist content and recruit individuals, directly impacting national security. This disruption of social order, erosion of freedom of expression, and the potential for radicalization underscore how extremism contributes to terrorism and societal division, all with grave implications for national security. Ms. Patabendige's forward-looking perspective, with strategies and recommendations for countering digital-age extremism, is vital for safeguarding national security interests. Her insights and recommendations focused on the overarching goal of protecting a nation's security.

Furthermore, INSS research staff, including research interns, had the valuable opportunity to participate in this conference, enhancing their knowledge of evolving security dynamics at the global, regional, and local levels. This experience in an international conference setting has enriched their understanding of contemporary security challenges.
